The most common cause of a broken top screen is a broken hinge. DS's hinges are often over extended causing the hinges to snap and/or the case to break. When the hinge's break it often damages the ribbon cable that runs through the left hinge.

When an LCD screen ribbon cable is damaged in some way the DS will often not turn on properly. The tell tale symptom of a screen ribbon cable being damaged or dislodged is:
  • when you attempt to turn the DS on the DS's power light will turn green, it will then brighten (to bright green) very briefly and then the DS will turn off.
If this is happening to your DS then you have damaged one of the screen ribbon cables, if the hinge is damaged also then it is almost definitely the top screen ribbon cable that is damaged. Unfortunately you can not repair the ribbon cables you need to replace the entire top screen.

The hinges are actually part of the case, so if you have snapped your hinge and the DS isn't turning on properly as we described above then you have actually damaged 3 components of the DS:
  • the case
  • the hinge
  • and the top LCD screen
Normally it would be quite expensive to repair these three components separately but luckily the friendly people at NintendoParts.com.au have come up with a 'repair bundle' to make repairing this common fault a simple and inexpensive process.
