Solder Wire - 60cm

$3.95

  • Status: In Stock

60cm of high quality 60/40% tin/lead resin cored 0.56mm diameter low melting temperature solder wire. This is the exact same solder wire that we use in our workshops, we have tried many different types of solder and have found this one to be the best for the kind of repairs we carry out on DS's and Wii's. 60cm should be more than enough to carry out multiple DS or Wii repairs. We would only use approximately 5cm for any given DS or Wii repair in our workshops.

We recommend the use of flux of some sort when soldering. Flux is basically an acidic agent that cleans the surface of a metal components removing the oxide layer which would otherwise act to prevent molten solder taking to the component. Flux is not compulsory but it makes soldering just that little bit easier, we use it all the time in our workshops. We like using a flux pen as they are neat, convenient and easy to use.

Soldering Tips & Tricks
-When the soldering iron is hot the tip will oxidize and become dull after a short time. A dull oxidized tip is hard to work with..... this is inevitable but manageable with a bit of knowledge.
-The tip of the soldering iron should be clean and shiny, if the tip is dull you should clean it with some flux.
-If the tip of the soldering iron quickly turns dull after cleaning you have the temperature set too high. You should balance the temperature to have it as hot as possible but at the same time the tip should stay clean and shiny for a workable amount of time whilst hot, at least 30 seconds.
-whilst the tip is hot, frequently wipe it on a piece of moist sponge to keep the tip clean and oxide free
-the tip should always be 'tinned', this means you should always have a very small layer of molten solder on the tip when working with it. This helps to prevent oxide from forming on the tip, and also helps heat conduct to the component you are trying to solder.
-put flux onto all components you are trying to solder, this removes the oxide layer from the components and helps the surface accept the molten solder.
-always clean and tin your tip before you start and after you finish. A clean, shiny, tinned solder tip is a happy solder tip :)
-only use a small amount of solder to connect components, a small solder join is quite strong. You're not building a suspension bridge, you just need to form a connection
-we highly recommend the use of safety glasses as small amounts of molten solder can sometimes splash, we would hate for you to get some in your eye. Hot molten solder + eye = bad :(
